Check the dashboard monthly. Open a ticket rather than guessing, and include the domain, the exact error and the timing.

KEEP YOUR OWN RECORDS

Credentials in a password manager, key details in a document stored off the hosting account, invoices downloaded periodically.

Do these and almost everything else takes care of itself.
