Setting Up an FTP Client Print

Connecting for the first time.

WHAT TO ENTER

  • Host: your domain or the server address
  • Username: your cPanel username or an FTP account you created
  • Password: the corresponding password
  • Port: 21 for FTP, 22 for SFTP where supported

WHICH CLIENT

Any established free client works. Several are widely used.

FIRST CONNECTION

You may be asked to accept the server's certificate. That is normal.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE

Your local files on one side, the server on the other.

You navigate both and drag files between them.

WHERE YOU LAND

Usually your home directory, above public_html.

Navigate into public_html for website files.

SETTINGS TO CHANGE

Show hidden files Set transfer mode to automatic Set a reasonable number of simultaneous connections

Too many connections triggers rate limiting.

IF THE CONNECTION FAILS

Check the details, the port, and whether passive mode is required.
