The first and most important step.
THE PRINCIPLE
Never upload an image larger than it will be displayed.
WHAT SIZE TO USE
- A full-width banner: around 1,600 to 2,000 pixels wide
- A content image: around 800 to 1,200
- A thumbnail or logo: whatever it displays at
HOW TO CHECK WHAT SIZE IS DISPLAYED
Look at the page. An image filling half the content area needs roughly half the content width.
Do not guess enormously high to be safe. That is the mistake.
WHY NOT LET THE SITE RESIZE IT
The visitor still downloads the original unless the site is specifically configured otherwise.
WordPress generates smaller versions, and whether they are used depends on the theme.
HOW TO RESIZE
Any image editor, including free ones and the one on your phone.
Set the width; the height follows.
FOR BULK RESIZING
Free tools can process a folder at once.
Worth doing for a shop with many products.
WHAT TO KEEP
The originals, elsewhere. Resizing is destructive.
