WHAT A GOOD ADVERT CONTAINS

What the role actually involves, day to day What you need from a candidate, distinguishing essential from desirable Where and when the work happens The salary, or a range How to apply and by when Something about the business

THE SALARY POINT

Omitting it wastes everyone's time and, in some jurisdictions, is restricted.

HOW TO BRIEF IT

"Write a job advert for [role]. Daily tasks: [list]. Essential: [list]. Desirable: [list]. Salary: [range]. Location: [where]. Plain language, no corporate phrasing."

WHAT TO BAN

"Rockstar", "ninja", "fast-paced environment", "wear many hats", "passionate".

These deter good candidates and communicate nothing.

THE REQUIREMENTS LIST

Ask for it to be short. Long lists of essential requirements deter qualified applicants, particularly those who assess themselves conservatively.

Distinguish genuinely essential from nice to have.

WHAT TO CHECK

That the requirements are lawful and not indirectly discriminatory That the description matches the actual job

FOR THE INTERVIEW

Ask for questions assessing each requirement.
