The habit worth building.
WHEN
Before updating anything Before installing a plugin Before editing a page substantially Before changing settings Before letting anyone else work on the site
HOW, QUICKLY
cPanel > Backup > Partial Backups > download the database. Under a minute, and restorable from the same page.
For bigger changes, files as well.
WHY IT MATTERS
A failed update with a backup is a five-minute rollback. Without one it is hours of diagnosis or a rebuild.
THE OBJECTION
Most changes work, so the two minutes seem unnecessary.
They are unnecessary until the one occasion they are not, and that occasion is unpredictable.
MAKING IT AUTOMATIC
Attach it to the action. Backup, then update. Always in that order.
WHAT ELSE
Note what you changed and when. If a problem appears a week later, that note identifies the cause.
FOR ANYONE ELSE WORKING ON THE SITE
Take one before granting access, regardless of how much you trust them. It protects both of you.
