Where usability becomes obligation.

THE POSITION

Accessibility requirements vary by jurisdiction and by sector. Public bodies and larger organisations frequently have explicit obligations.

For a small private business the legal position varies, and the practical case is strong regardless.

THE PRACTICAL CASE

People with impairments are customers. A site they cannot use is a customer you cannot serve.

The measures are also straightforward and benefit everyone.

THE MINIMUM

Sufficient colour contrast Text that can be enlarged Alt text on images Proper heading structure Keyboard usability Labelled form fields

WHAT TO AVOID CLAIMING

Do not claim full compliance with an accessibility standard unless you have tested against it properly. A false claim is worse than none.

OVERLAY TOOLS

Products claiming to make a site accessible automatically are widely criticised by accessibility practitioners and do not address underlying problems.

Fix the site rather than adding a layer over it.

THIS IS GENERAL GUIDANCE

Take proper advice if you have specific obligations.
