Helping people find things.
KEEP IT SHORT
Six to eight items. More than that becomes a list nobody reads, particularly on a phone.
If you have more pages, group them under those items.
USE PLAIN LABELS
"Services", "Prices", "Contact". Not "Solutions", "Investment" or "Connect".
Clever navigation labels are a common and costly mistake.
CONSISTENCY
The same navigation on every page, in the same place.
THE LOGO
Should link to the homepage. Visitors expect this and use it constantly.
ON MOBILE
A menu icon, tappable, opening a readable list.
Keep the most important item visible without opening the menu, particularly the phone number.
DROPDOWNS
Use sparingly. They are awkward on touchscreens and hide content.
Two levels at most.
THE FOOTER
A second chance at navigation, and where people look for contact details, hours and legal pages.
THE TEST
Ask someone unfamiliar with the site to find a specific page. Watch where they look.
