Discounting works when it is deliberate.
BEFORE YOU DISCOUNT
Check the margin on the discounted price. A twenty per cent discount on a thin margin can make a sale unprofitable, and volume does not fix that.
WHAT TO DISCOUNT
Slow-moving stock you want to clear A product that leads to repeat purchase A first order, to acquire a customer
WHAT NOT TO DISCOUNT
Your best sellers, which sell anyway Everything, permanently, which becomes your normal price
STRUCTURE
A time limit, so there is a reason to act now A specific code per campaign, so you can measure what worked Usage limits and an expiry date, always
ALTERNATIVES TO PERCENTAGE DISCOUNTS
Free delivery above a threshold, which increases basket size and is easier to budget A bundle at a set price, which moves more units A gift with purchase, which costs you wholesale rather than retail
AFTERWARDS
Check what it actually earned, not just what it sold. Revenue with no margin is activity, not profit.
