SETTING UP A DOWNLOADABLE PRODUCT
- Products > Add New, and under Product data tick Downloadable and Virtual.
- Add the file, either by uploading it or by entering a URL.
- Set the download limit and expiry, or leave them blank for unlimited.
WHERE TO STORE THE FILE
Upload through the product screen, which places it in a protected folder. Do not put purchasable files in a publicly reachable directory, or anyone with the URL can take them without paying.
SETTINGS TO CHECK
WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Downloadable products. Set the file access method and whether login is required to download.
Requiring an account reduces casual sharing but adds friction. For low-value items, allowing guest download usually sells more.
PRACTICAL POINTS
Large files strain hosting on every download. For anything substantial, consider dedicated file delivery. Set a sensible download limit, such as three, to stop a link being shared widely while allowing for genuine re-downloads. Digital goods have their own refund considerations. State your position in your terms.
