For products sold in several sizes, colours or options.
THE SEQUENCE
- Products > Attributes. Create the attribute, such as Size, and add its terms: Small, Medium, Large.
- Open the product, go to the Attributes tab, add the attribute, select the terms, and tick "Used for variations". Save.
- Go to the Variations tab and generate variations from all attributes.
- Set a price for each variation. A variation without a price cannot be bought.
- Optionally set stock, weight, SKU and an image per variation.
WHY GLOBAL ATTRIBUTES
Defining Size once globally means filtering works across the catalogue. Attributes created on individual products do not.
COMMON PROBLEMS
"Add to cart" greyed out: a variation has no price
- Variations not appearing: "Used for variations" was not ticked
- Very slow product editing: too many variations. A product with five attributes of five options each generates over three thousand combinations. Reduce the combinations, or split into separate products.
- Settings failing to save: raise max_input_vars to 3000 in cPanel.
