A setting that causes mail to vanish when it is wrong.

WHAT IT CONTROLS

Whether our server delivers mail for your domain into a local mailbox, or passes it to whatever the MX records point at.

THE OPTIONS

  • Local Mail Exchanger: always deliver locally, ignoring external MX records.
  • Remote Mail Exchanger: never deliver locally; send to wherever MX points.
  • Automatically Detect: decide based on the MX records.

WHERE TO SET IT

cPanel > Email Routing.

THE CLASSIC FAILURE

You move email to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, change the MX records, and mail still disappears. The routing is still Local, so our server delivers into a local mailbox nobody checks while the external provider never receives it.

Set it to Remote whenever your MX records point elsewhere.

THE REVERSE

If routing is Remote but MX points here, mail leaves and comes back or bounces.

WHEN IN DOUBT

Automatically Detect is safe for most situations. Set it explicitly only when you have a reason.
