Useful for holidays and closures, irritating when misconfigured.

CREATING ONE

cPanel > Autoresponders > Add Autoresponder.

Set the Interval in hours: how long before the same sender receives the reply again. 24 is sensible. Zero replies to every message and looks automated in the worst way.

Set the From name, the subject, and the body. Set a Start and Stop time so it expires by itself.

WRITING A GOOD ONE

Say when you will return Give an alternative contact for anything urgent Keep it to three lines

WHAT NOT TO INCLUDE

Your exact travel dates and location, which tells strangers your premises may be empty Personal details, since everyone who emails receives it, including spammers A long explanation

TURNING IT OFF

Setting a Stop time at creation is the reliable method. Autoresponders still running months later are common and look careless.

A CAUTION

An autoresponder confirms to a spammer that the address is live. Use a short interval and a stop date.
