The reliable route is manual setup rather than the automatic option.
THE STEPS
- Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account > Other > Add Mail Account.
- Enter your name, the full email address, the password, and a description.
- Tap Next. The phone will try to detect settings and usually fails; that is expected.
- Choose IMAP at the top.
- Incoming Mail Server: hostname mail.yourdomain.com, username the FULL email address, password as set.
- Outgoing Mail Server: the same hostname, and enter the username and password again even though iOS labels them optional. They are not optional.
- Save. Accept the certificate prompt if the domain is not yet resolving to us.
AFTERWARDS
Settings > Mail > Accounts > your account > Account > Advanced. Check incoming uses SSL on port 993.
Back on the account screen, tap the outgoing server and confirm SSL is on and the port is 465.
THE USUAL FAILURE
Leaving the outgoing username and password blank. The account then receives mail but cannot send, which is the most common iPhone mail complaint we see.
