UPGRADING
The prorated charge is a payment, and typically earns at the applicable rate. Where tiers exist, a larger plan may move you up over time.
Your account continues, so tenure is preserved.
DOWNGRADING
Lower ongoing spend means lower ongoing earning, and may affect tier standing at the next review.
Downgrading is still the right decision if the smaller plan fits. Paying for capacity you do not use to protect a tier is never worthwhile.
WHAT NOT TO DO
Do not cancel and reorder in order to convert a change into a new order. Tenure is lost, the service is interrupted, and the rules usually exclude it anyway.
Use the Upgrade/Downgrade option, which preserves the account.
IF YOU ARE PLANNING A RESTRUCTURE
If you hold several services and are considering consolidating or splitting them, ask in a ticket how it affects your standing. Restructuring in a way that resets years of tenure is avoidable if you know beforehand.
