How Domain Auctions Work

An auction runs until a fixed end time. The highest valid bid wins, provided the seller’s reserve price, if one has been set is met.

Placing a Bid

Open the auction listing, enter an amount that is at least the current price plus the displayed minimum bid increment, and confirm your bid. You’ll immediately see whether you are currently the highest bidder.

Reserve Prices

A reserve price is a hidden minimum amount set by the seller. The listing will indicate whether the reserve has been met.

If the auction ends below the reserve price, the domain is not automatically sold. However, the seller may choose to negotiate with the highest bidder after the auction.

Bids Placed Near the End

Bids placed during the final minutes may extend the auction closing time. This is intentional and helps prevent a domain from being won by a last-second bid while giving other bidders a fair opportunity to respond.

Auctions ending soon are clearly highlighted. If you’re actively bidding on one, keep an eye on the listing until it closes.

Every Bid Is a Commitment

A bid is a binding commitment to purchase. If you win the auction, you are responsible for paying the winning amount.

Do not place bids simply to test the system or see what happens. Winning an auction and failing to pay may result in restricted or suspended marketplace access.

If You Win

Once the auction ends and you are the successful bidder, an invoice is automatically generated.

Pay the invoice within the stated payment period. Once payment is confirmed, the domain transfer process begins just like any other marketplace purchase.

If You Are Outbid

If another bidder places a higher bid, you’ll receive a notification. You can choose to place another bid if you’re still interested.

If you are ultimately outbid, you owe nothing.

How to Bid Wisely

Set your maximum budget before the auction begins and stick to it.

When deciding your limit, consider more than the auction price. Factor in the domain’s renewal cost, especially for extensions with higher annual renewal fees. A low winning price may not be a good deal if the domain is expensive to maintain.

Once you reach your predetermined limit, stop bidding.

Auctions are designed to create competition and can tempt you to spend more than you originally planned. Know your ceiling, bid responsibly, and don't let the excitement of an auction make the decision for you.
