Direction.

WHAT A USEFUL GOAL IS

Specific Measurable, or at least verifiable Within your influence Attached to a date

WHAT A POOR ONE IS

Vague Dependent entirely on others With no way of knowing whether it was achieved

WHAT TO DEFINE

What would be different if you achieved it.

WHY

It clarifies what you actually want.

HOW MANY

Few. Several simultaneous goals produce progress on none.

WHAT TO BREAK THEM INTO

The next concrete action.

WHY

Goals are not actionable. Actions are.

WHAT TO SCHEDULE

Time for the work, not only the intention.

WHAT TO REVIEW

Progress, at defined intervals.

WHAT TO ASK AT REVIEW

Is this still what I want? Am I making progress? What is preventing it?

WHAT TO DO ABOUT A GOAL NO LONGER WANTED

Abandon it deliberately, rather than letting it lapse.

WHY

Lapsed goals accumulate as a sense of failure.

WHAT TO RECORD

What you achieved, since it is easily forgotten.
