The summary.

STATE WHAT YOU WANT THE AUDIENCE TO TAKE AWAY IN ONE SENTENCE

If you cannot, the talk has no purpose yet. Then three or four supporting points, no more — audiences retain very little.

SLIDES SUPPORT WHAT YOU SAY; THEY DO NOT CONTAIN IT

An audience reads faster than you speak, then stops listening.

Put everything you intend to say in the notes, and test readability from the back of the room.

REHEARSE ALOUD AND TIMED

Speaking it is different from reading it silently, and reveals what does not work.

Know your opening precisely — the first thirty seconds are where nerves are worst.

SPEAK MORE SLOWLY THAN FEELS NATURAL, AND PAUSE

Nervousness accelerates speech. Pauses let the audience absorb and make you appear composed.

Nerves are not visible to the extent you imagine.

WHEN YOU DO NOT KNOW THE ANSWER, SAY SO

It is respected. Bluffing is usually obvious and is not.

TITLE A CHART WITH THE FINDING, NOT THE SUBJECT

And state limitations honestly — it strengthens credibility rather than weakening it.

EXPLAINING TO NON-SPECIALISTS: ASSUME INTELLIGENCE, NOT KNOWLEDGE

Invite specific questions. People say yes to "did that make sense?" regardless.
