An IP address is the numeric address of a device on the internet. Every server, router and connected computer has one.
THE FORM
IPv4 addresses look like 192.0.2.45, four numbers separated by dots, each between 0 and 255. IPv6 addresses are longer and written in hexadecimal, separated by colons.
WHY YOUR SITE HAS ONE
Domain names exist for humans. Computers route traffic by IP address. When someone types your domain, DNS translates it into an IP address, and the browser connects to that address.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR HOSTING
Your hosting account sits on a server with one or more IP addresses. Your domain's A record points at one of them. If that record is wrong or missing, the domain resolves to nothing even though the server is running perfectly.
WHERE TO SEE YOURS
cPanel's right-hand statistics panel shows the shared IP address for your account, and a dedicated IP if you hold one.
WHAT IT IS NOT
An IP address is not your domain, not your hosting plan, and not something visitors ever see in normal use.
