Menus on phones.

THE PROBLEM

Navigation that fits a wide screen does not fit a narrow one.

WHAT MOST DESIGNS DO

Collapse it behind a control.

WHAT THAT COSTS

Discoverability. Hidden navigation is used less.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT THAT

Keep the most important one or two destinations visible Label the control, rather than relying on a symbol alone

WHAT TO ENSURE

The control is obviously a control It is large enough Opening and closing is obvious

WHAT TO AVOID

Several levels hidden within a collapsed menu Menus requiring precise interaction Menus covering content with no way to close

WHAT TO CONSIDER

A persistent bar of key actions at the bottom, within thumb reach.

WHAT TO KEEP AVAILABLE

Search, where content is substantial.

WHAT TO TEST

Whether people find a section that lives inside the menu.

WHAT TO CHECK

That the current location is indicated.
