Beliefs worth discarding.

"PEOPLE WILL READ THE INSTRUCTIONS"

They will not.

"PEOPLE WILL EXPLORE TO FIND THINGS"

They will try once and leave.

"IF IT IS OBVIOUS TO ME IT IS OBVIOUS"

You built it. You cannot judge.

"MORE OPTIONS IS BETTER"

More options means more decisions, and slower.

"PEOPLE WILL ENTER DATA CORRECTLY"

They will not. Design for what they actually enter.

"NOBODY USES THAT OLD DEVICE"

Check your own figures before believing it.

"WE CAN EXPLAIN IT IN ONBOARDING"

Anything requiring explanation is a design problem deferred.

"USERS WANT THE SAME THING WE WANT"

Frequently not. Ask.

"BEAUTIFUL MEANS USABLE"

Unrelated. Sometimes opposed.

"WE WILL FIX IT AFTER LAUNCH"

Rarely happens.

WHAT REPLACES ALL OF THESE

Watching real people use it.
