So that a domain's holder can be identified for legal, technical and abuse purposes.
WHY IT MATTERS TO YOU
Anyone can look up your name, address, email and phone number for many extensions. In practice this generates a steady stream of spam, cold calls and fraudulent renewal notices designed to look official.
WHAT REDUCES THAT
ID protection, where the extension supports it, replaces your details with the privacy service's while you remain the legal owner. Enable it under Domains > My Domains.
Some extensions and registries now publish limited data by default, and some do not offer privacy at all.
USING WHOIS YOURSELF
It is useful for checking a domain's expiry date, confirming which registrar holds it, and seeing which nameservers it uses. If you are trying to buy a domain someone else owns, it is the starting point.
