You can add years to an existing registration without waiting for expiry, up to the maximum the registry allows.
WHICH DOMAINS DESERVE IT
Your primary business domain. If your website and email depend on it, the cost of several years in advance is trivial against the cost of losing it.
Defensive registrations and campaign domains are fine on annual terms.
STILL ENABLE AUTO-RENEWAL
A ten-year registration still expires eventually, usually long after everyone who set it up has forgotten. Auto-renewal and a note in a calendar remain worthwhile.
Check whether the extension supports multi-year registration; a few country-code extensions limit the term.
