Choosing a Good Domain Name Print

You will live with this choice for years, and changing it later costs traffic and rankings.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD ONE

Short. Easier to type, say and remember. Easy to spell from hearing it. If you have to spell it out on the phone every time, it is the wrong name. Pronounceable. Word of mouth matters more than people expect. Related to what you do, or to your brand name. Free of hyphens and numbers where possible. Both cause confusion when spoken.

WHAT TO AVOID

Deliberate misspellings of a common word. Visitors type the correct spelling and reach someone else. Doubled letters at word boundaries, which invite typos. Anything close to an existing trademark. This is how people lose domains through disputes. Very long names, which get truncated and mistyped.

EXTENSIONS

.com remains the default assumption. For a Nigerian business, .com.ng and .ng are well understood locally and often available when .com is not.

If your business is local and the .com is taken by an unrelated company abroad, a .com.ng is usually the better choice than a compromised .com variant.

BEFORE REGISTERING

Check social media handle availability, and check nobody holds a trademark on the name in your sector.
