WHAT AN ALIAS OR FORWARDER IS

An address that delivers to another mailbox, without its own storage.

WHEN TO USE ONE

Role addresses: sales, support, accounts

Addresses for specific purposes Addresses for a domain you own but do not use for mail

WHY NOT A FULL MAILBOX

An alias uses no storage and needs no separate checking.

HOW TO SET IT UP

cPanel, Forwarders.

WHAT TO BE CAREFUL WITH

Forwarding to an external address, which can affect deliverability.

The forwarded mail arrives from your server, but with the original sender, which can fail authentication checks.

WHAT THAT MEANS

Forwarding to a free email provider sometimes results in mail being rejected or marked as spam.

THE ALTERNATIVE

Collect the mail directly rather than forwarding it.

FOR DEPARTING STAFF

A forwarder from their old address to someone else, for a period.

WHAT TO REVIEW

Forwarders you no longer need.

Old ones send mail to people who left.
