What an Invoice Must Contain Print

The essentials.

WHAT EVERY INVOICE NEEDS

The word "Invoice" A unique invoice number The date issued Your business name and address Your contact details The customer's name and address A description of what was supplied The amount, clearly Payment terms and due date How to pay

THE INVOICE NUMBER

Unique and sequential.

Your accountant needs this. So do you, when chasing payment.

THE DESCRIPTION

Specific enough that the customer recognises what they are paying for.

"Consultancy services" invites questions. "Website redesign, phase one, as agreed 3 March" does not.

THE DUE DATE

An actual date, not "30 days".

"Due 15 April" is clearer and harder to ignore.

HOW TO PAY

Account details, or a payment link.

Make paying the easiest thing on the page.

FOR REGISTERED BUSINESSES

Include your registration number.

Your accountant can tell you what else applies to your situation.
