What you may process.
WHAT IS GENERALLY FINE
Summarising a document for your own understanding Translating for your own use Analysing material you legitimately hold
WHAT IS PROBLEMATIC
Reproducing substantial parts of a work Producing a substitute for the original Publishing a detailed summary that replaces reading it Processing material you are not permitted to hold
THE SUBSTITUTE TEST
If your output means nobody needs the original, that is a problem.
FOR PAID CONTENT
Summarising a paid report and publishing the summary undermines the original.
FOR CLIENT AND EMPLOYER MATERIAL
Check whether you are permitted to send it to a third party.
Many agreements restrict this.
FOR ACADEMIC MATERIAL
Check your institution's position on uploading course texts.
FOR IMAGES AND MEDIA
Do not ask for reproductions of existing works.
THE PRACTICAL POSITION
Processing for your own understanding is generally acceptable. Publishing something that substitutes for the original is not.
