With a phone.

LIGHT

Natural light, near a window, is the single biggest factor.

Turn off overhead lights, which produce unpleasant colour. Avoid direct sun, which produces harsh shadows.

Overcast daylight is ideal.

Never use the flash.

BACKGROUND

Plain and uncluttered. Remove anything distracting.

For products, a consistent background across all photographs makes the account look coherent.

FRAMING

Fill the frame. Most amateur photographs are taken too far away.

Hold the phone steady, tap to focus, take several.

FOR PRODUCTS

The same angle and background each time, so the grid looks deliberate rather than accidental.

FOR WORK IN PROGRESS

Take the photograph before you finish tidying. The reality is more interesting than the staged version.

FOR PEOPLE

Near a window, facing the light.

EDITING

Crop, straighten, adjust brightness. Avoid heavy filters, which date quickly.

Consistency matters more than perfection.

THE PRACTICAL HABIT

Photograph as you work. Assembling content later produces worse photographs.
