Recovering From a Deleted DNS Zone Print

  • dnsnameservers, dns, domain, cpanel, email, spf, dkim, deliverability, nameservers, backup
  • 0

Records gone.

WHAT HAPPENS

The domain stops resolving entirely. Website and mail both fail.

The hosting account and its data are untouched.

HOW IT HAPPENS

A zone deleted in error A domain removed and re-added in cPanel An account action that reset DNS Losing access to an external DNS provider

WHAT TO DO FIRST

If our nameservers are in use, open a ticket. We can restore or recreate the zone.

A full account backup includes the zone, if you have one.

IF YOU HAVE A ZONE EXPORT

Import it, or recreate the records from it. That is why exporting matters.

IF YOU HAVE NEITHER

Recreate from knowledge. The essentials:

An A record for the domain, pointing at your server An A record or CNAME for www MX records pointing at your mail hostname An A record for that hostname SPF and DKIM, which cPanel > Email Deliverability can regenerate

WHAT IS HARDEST TO RECOVER

Verification records for third-party services. You will have to re-verify each.

PREVENTION

Export the zone. Ten minutes, once, covering exactly this.
