Getting both right together.
THE SEQUENCE THAT WORKS
- Choose a name
- Check the domain is available
- Check the business name is available for registration
- Register both
Doing these out of order causes problems. A registered business whose domain is taken, or a domain whose name cannot be registered, are both expensive to unwind.
REGISTERING THE DOMAIN IN THE BUSINESS NAME
Once the business exists, the domain should be registered with the business as the registrant, not an individual and not a developer.
The registrant record is what establishes ownership in a dispute.
IF THE DOMAIN IS ALREADY IN SOMEONE ELSE'S NAME
Change the registrant details. Note that some extensions treat a registrant change as a transfer and apply a lock afterwards, so plan it.
FOR RESTRICTED EXTENSIONS
Some .ng extensions have eligibility requirements and may need documentation. If unsure, open a ticket and ask before ordering.
