An alias makes an additional domain show the same website as your main domain. Both addresses load identical content.
WHEN TO USE ONE
You registered .com, .com.ng and .ng versions of your name and want them all to reach one site. You own a common misspelling of your domain. You are protecting a brand name without building a separate site for it.
If you want the second domain to show a DIFFERENT website, you need an addon domain instead.
CREATING AN ALIAS
- Point the domain's nameservers at your account first.
- In cPanel open Aliases under Domains.
- Enter the domain name under Create a New Alias.
- Click Add Domain.
REDIRECTING INSTEAD OF MIRRORING
Showing the same content on two addresses can split your search rankings. Most people should redirect the alias to the main domain: in the Aliases tool, use "Manage Redirection" beside the alias and enter your main domain.
Run AutoSSL afterwards so the alias is covered by a certificate, otherwise visitors reaching it over HTTPS will see a warning.
