A question worth revisiting annually.
THE HONEST QUESTIONS
Are you applying updates promptly, or is there a backlog? Have you tested a restore in the last year? Is monitoring configured and reaching you? Does anyone other than one person know how the server is configured? Is the requirement that justified a VPS still current? Does the time it consumes justify what it provides over shared hosting?
IF THE ANSWERS ARE UNCOMFORTABLE
That is useful information, not a failure. An unmaintained VPS is genuinely worse than a managed shared or reseller plan.
THE OPTIONS
Move to managed, keeping the control while transferring the maintenance Move back to shared or reseller hosting, if the requirement has gone Bring in someone to maintain it Commit properly to the routine
WHAT NOT TO DO
Continue as you are while knowing it is not being maintained. That is the state in which servers get compromised, and the consequences fall on you and your customers.
