Transferring operational responsibility.
WHAT THE NEW OWNER NEEDS
Documentation of what runs and where Credentials, transferred securely An explanation of any non-standard configuration Backup arrangements and where backups live Details of third-party services and integrations Known issues and workarounds
THE ACCESS HANDOVER
Create an account and install their SSH key rather than sharing yours Remove your own access when the handover completes
Rotate credentials you knew: root password, database passwords, API keys
Transfer the provider account formally if ownership is changing
WHAT TO DO BEFORE HANDING OVER
Apply updates, so they do not inherit a backlog Confirm backups are working Take a snapshot Tidy anything you know is untidy, or document it
WHAT NOT TO DO
Hand over a login and nothing else. The new owner will spend weeks working out what the server does, and something will break in the meantime.
IF THE HANDOVER IS TO US
Ask about managed options. We will tell you what we would need and what we would take on.
