When a slice of a machine is not enough.
THE DIFFERENCE
A VPS is a portion of a physical server, virtualised. A dedicated server is the whole machine.
WHEN DEDICATED MAKES SENSE
Sustained heavy resource use where virtualisation overhead matters A requirement for specific hardware Compliance requiring physically separate infrastructure Very large databases where disk performance is critical Workloads that consume an entire machine anyway
WHEN A VPS IS BETTER
Almost everything else. Cheaper, faster to provision, easier to scale, and snapshots make recovery simpler.
THE PRACTICAL POSITION
Modern virtualisation overhead is small. Most workloads that feel like they need dedicated hardware actually need tuning or a larger VPS.
THE COST
A dedicated server costs considerably more and takes longer to provision. Scaling means physically changing hardware rather than adjusting an allocation.
MANAGEMENT
The same responsibilities apply, and the same managed options exist. A dedicated server does not manage itself any more than a VPS does.
BEFORE DECIDING
Open a ticket with your actual resource usage. We will tell you honestly whether a larger VPS covers it.
