Diagnosing Redirect Loops Print

The browser reports too many redirects and the page never loads.

THE CAUSE

Two or more things are redirecting in a circle. Almost always one of these combinations:

The cPanel Force HTTPS toggle plus an .htaccess rule plus a plugin setting Cloudflare set to Flexible, which requests http from us while serving https, and our redirect sends it back A www redirect and a non-www redirect pointing at each other The application's site URL disagreeing with the redirect

DIAGNOSING

  1. Turn off every redirect mechanism you can find: the cPanel toggle, plugin SSL settings, and any .htaccess rule. Confirm the site loads over http.
  2. Re-enable one method only.
  3. Test in a private window.

FOR CLOUDFLARE SPECIFICALLY

Set SSL/TLS to Full (strict). This resolves the majority of loops on Cloudflare sites and takes ten seconds.

FOR WORDPRESS

Check Settings > General. If the site URL is http while a redirect forces https, the application and the server disagree permanently.

TESTING

Always in a private window. Browsers cache redirects aggressively and will keep showing the loop after you have fixed it.
