Saying no well.
WHAT SITUATIONS ARISE
A feature that does not exist A policy exception Work outside what you provide Something technically impossible
WHAT TO DO FIRST
Understand what they are actually trying to achieve.
WHY
The underlying need frequently has another solution.
WHAT TO SAY
That the specific request is not possible, and why.
WHAT TO OFFER
An alternative route to the same outcome, if one exists.
WHAT TO AVOID
A flat refusal with no explanation Vague wording implying it might happen Blaming an unnamed policy
WHY VAGUENESS IS WORSE
It produces repeated asking and a sense of being strung along.
WHAT TO DO ABOUT FEATURE REQUESTS
Record them, tell the customer they are recorded, and be honest about likelihood.
WHAT NOT TO SAY
That it is on the roadmap, unless it is.
WHY
It will be remembered and quoted back.
WHAT TO DO ABOUT WORK OUTSIDE YOUR SCOPE
State what is included and what is not, then offer a paid option if you have one.
WHY THAT IS FAIR
It is clear, and it respects both sides.
WHAT TO DO WHEN A CUSTOMER PERSISTS
Repeat the answer once, consistently, then hold.
WHY CONSISTENCY MATTERS
Changing the answer under pressure teaches that pressure works.
