An office with a static address where staff use cPanel and FTP regularly A development machine repeatedly triggering firewall blocks during legitimate work An external service that needs to connect in, such as remote MySQL
HOW TO REQUEST IT
Open a ticket with the address, from whatismyip.com, and an explanation of what it is for.
WHAT TO BE AWARE OF
Most home and mobile connections have dynamic addresses that change, so a whitelist entry stops matching. Only fixed addresses are worth whitelisting. Whitelisting reduces protection for that address. It should be a specific address, never a broad range.
REMOTE MYSQL SPECIFICALLY
cPanel > Remote MySQL lets you add an access host yourself. Never enter % as the host; that permits the entire internet to attempt connections to your database.
REVIEWING
Remove whitelist entries when the work finishes or the office moves. A stale entry is a permanent hole nobody remembers opening.
