Resellers setting up their own nameservers often ask whether they need a dedicated IP.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Usually not. Private nameservers can point at your account's existing server address.
HOW PRIVATE NAMESERVERS WORK
You create glue records at your registrar for ns1.yourbrand.com and ns2.yourbrand.com, both pointing at your server's IP. You add matching A records in your own DNS zone. You then set those hostnames in WHM and ask us to register them.
Clients point their domains at your branded nameservers instead of ours.
WHERE A DEDICATED IP HELPS
Some registrars historically required two distinct addresses for two nameservers. Many no longer do, and both can point at the same address.
If your registrar insists on two, a dedicated IP gives you a second address to use.
WHAT TO DO
Try with a single address first. If your registrar rejects it, open a ticket and we will advise.
IMPORTANT
If your account is migrated, the glue records and A records must be updated to the new address, or every client domain using your nameservers goes dark.
