The most common reason people ask for a dedicated IP, and it has not been true for a decade.
THE HISTORY
Before Server Name Indication became universally supported, a server could present only one SSL certificate per IP address. Hosting multiple secure sites therefore required multiple addresses, and a dedicated IP was genuinely necessary for SSL.
WHAT CHANGED
SNI allows the browser to tell the server which hostname it wants before the certificate is presented. The server then presents the right certificate. Every browser and operating system in current use supports it.
THE POSITION TODAY
AutoSSL issues free certificates on shared IPs, and they work exactly as a certificate on a dedicated IP would. The padlock is identical. The encryption is identical. Browsers make no distinction.
WHY THE ADVICE PERSISTS
Older articles remain online and rank well. Some providers still sell dedicated IPs on this basis.
WHAT TO DO
If SSL is your reason, you do not need a dedicated IP. Run AutoSSL from cPanel > SSL/TLS Status and you are done, at no cost.
