How IP Addresses Relate to DNS Print

DNS is the system that turns names into addresses. Understanding the link explains most connectivity problems.

THE RECORDS INVOLVED

  • A record: maps a name to an IPv4 address
  • AAAA record: maps a name to an IPv6 address
  • CNAME: maps a name to another name, which eventually resolves to an address
  • NS: says which nameservers hold these records

WHERE YOUR RECORDS LIVE

Wherever your nameservers point. If they point at us, manage records in cPanel > Zone Editor. If they point at Cloudflare or another provider, records must be managed there, and the cPanel zone has no effect.

WHAT GOES WRONG

The A record points at an old host's address after a migration The nameservers point at the wrong provider entirely A dedicated IP was issued but the A record still points at the shared one Records edited in cPanel while DNS is actually hosted elsewhere

HOW TO CHECK

Look up your domain with any DNS tool. Compare the returned address with the address shown in cPanel. A mismatch is usually the whole problem.
