The summary.
THE NAMING CONVENTION THAT SOLVES MOST PROBLEMS
Most general first, most specific last, with dates written year-month-day in numbers.
That sorts correctly. Other date formats do not.
"Final", "final2", "final-really" is the universal symptom of having no version convention.
SEARCH RATHER THAN BROWSE
Learn your system's search and how to open it with a keystroke. It replaces most navigation.
When you cannot remember the name, sort by date modified.
FOR COLLABORATION, SHARE A LOCATION, NOT COPIES
Then there is only one current version, by construction.
BEFORE SENDING ANY DOCUMENT OUTSIDE
Check hidden rows and sheets, tracked changes, comments and properties. Documents frequently contain more than what is visible.
WHEN A FILE IS LOST, STOP USING THE DRIVE
Deleted data remains until overwritten, and continued use overwrites it.
Check the recycle bin, version history, and the program's recovery copies first.
FIND WHAT IS ACTUALLY CONSUMING DISK SPACE
Guessing is usually wrong. Review the downloads folder — it grows unnoticed.
NEVER KEEP THE ONLY COPY OF ANYTHING ON A MEMORY DEVICE
They fail without warning, and cheap ones fail sooner.
