Check the terms before spending money on advertising.

WHAT IS TYPICALLY RESTRICTED

Bidding on our brand name or close variants in paid search. This is prohibited in most affiliate programmes, because it competes with our own advertising for people already looking for us, and pays commission on customers who would have found us anyway. Advertising that impersonates us or implies official status. Direct linking, where the advertisement points straight at our site rather than at your own content, where the terms prohibit it.

WHAT IS USUALLY ACCEPTABLE

Advertising your own content, which then carries your affiliate link, subject to the terms.

THE ECONOMICS

Paid advertising for affiliate commission rarely works on a one-off commission. The cost per click on hosting-related terms is high and competitive, and the commission on a single order frequently does not cover the advertising that produced it.

BEFORE SPENDING ANYTHING

Read the terms, and ask in a ticket if anything is ambiguous. Spending money on advertising that breaches the terms means forfeiting the commission it produces, which is the worst possible outcome.
