The mechanics.

WHAT AN AUCTION IS

A listing open for competitive bidding until a stated closing time.

HOW IT PROCEEDS

Bidding opens at a starting price Bidders raise it in increments The auction closes at its stated time The highest bid wins, if the reserve is met

WHAT A BID COMMITS YOU TO

Buying at that price if you win.

Do not bid an amount you are unwilling to pay.

WHAT THE RESERVE IS

A minimum the seller will accept.

If bidding does not reach it, the name does not sell.

WHETHER YOU SEE THE RESERVE

Usually not the figure itself.

You are told whether it has been met.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU WIN

You are notified and payment is requested.

Then the transfer follows as with any sale.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE RESERVE IS NOT MET

The name does not sell.

The seller may relist, or contact the highest bidder.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE BIDDING

The name, the closing time, and your maximum.
