A VPS gives control. It also gives you a server to look after.
WHEN IT IS WARRANTED
You need root access, custom server software or specific system packages You need control over PHP versions and modules server-wide You have outgrown the largest reseller plan You need custom firewall or security configuration A client requirement cannot be met on shared infrastructure
WHEN IT IS NOT
A slow client site that has never had caching enabled. It will be slow on a VPS too. A vague preference for dedicated resources.
WHAT CHANGES
You become responsible for operating system updates, security patching, control panel licensing, backups, monitoring and configuration, unless you buy the VPS managed.
That is real ongoing work requiring real knowledge. Budget the time, or the money for management.
MIGRATING
Accounts move as cPanel backups. Migrate in batches, test each, switch nameservers, and keep the old reseller account running for a week.
Nameservers change. If you use private nameservers, the glue records and A records must be repointed at the new IP or every client domain goes dark.
