What actually matters.

WHAT TO BACK UP

Your source: content files, templates, configuration.

Not primarily the output, which can be rebuilt.

WHERE THE SOURCE SHOULD LIVE

Version control, ideally.

That gives you history as well as a backup.

IF YOU DO NOT USE VERSION CONTROL

Keep dated copies of the source somewhere other than your own machine.

WHAT TO ALSO KEEP

A copy of the built output, so you can restore quickly without rebuilding.

WHAT ELSE TO RECORD

Which generator and version Which dependencies How to build it

THAT LAST POINT

A site you cannot rebuild because nobody remembers the process is at risk.

Document the build steps.

WHAT PEOPLE DISCOVER

That the only copy of the source was on a laptop that failed.

WHAT TO TEST

That you can rebuild from your backup.
