Shared hosting is designed around PHP, but other runtimes may be available depending on the server.

WHAT TO CHECK

Look in cPanel for Setup Node.js App, Setup Python App or Setup Ruby App under the Software section. If they are present, you can create an application, choose a version, set the application root and start-up file, and install dependencies from the interface.

TYPICAL LIMITATIONS ON SHARED HOSTING

Long-running processes, background workers and websocket servers are often restricted, because they conflict with the shared model. Memory and process limits apply as they do to PHP. You cannot install system packages or change server-level configuration. Some frameworks expect a level of control that shared hosting does not provide.

WHEN TO USE A VPS INSTEAD

If your application needs persistent processes, a specific system library, custom server software, or root access, a VPS is the right environment. Attempting to force it onto shared hosting produces an unreliable result and frustration on both sides.

BEFORE YOU BUILD

Open a ticket describing what you intend to run, including the runtime, framework and whether it needs background processes. We will tell you honestly whether shared hosting suits it before you invest the time.
