Server Migrations: What to Expect Print

Occasionally we move accounts between servers, for hardware replacement, load balancing or platform upgrades.

WHAT WE DO

We copy your account to the new server, keeping files, databases, email and settings intact. The copy runs while your site continues serving from the old server, so there is no interruption during the transfer itself. We update DNS so the domain resolves to the new location. The old copy stays in place for a period so nothing is lost during propagation.

WHAT YOU MAY NEED TO DO

Your nameservers may change. We operate more than one pair, and an account moving between servers usually needs its nameservers repointed. If your domain is registered with us we handle this. If it is registered elsewhere, or your DNS is at Cloudflare, you must update the records yourself, and we will tell you exactly what to change. If you use a dedicated IP or have firewall rules keyed to an IP address, those need updating. If you use an external mail filter or a third-party service pointed at your server's IP, update it.

AFTERWARDS

Check the site loads, email sends and receives, and cron jobs still run. Report anything that looks wrong promptly.
