What to Do When Your Website Is Down Print

Work through this quickly before opening a ticket. Several of these are resolved in under a minute.

1. IS IT ACTUALLY DOWN?

Test from mobile data with wifi off. If it loads there but not on your usual connection, your IP address has been blocked by the firewall, usually after failed logins. Open a ticket with your address from whatismyip.com and we will release it.

Use an external "is it down" checking service for a second opinion.

2. WHAT DOES THE ERROR SAY?

A blank page or 500 error is usually your website's code: a bad .htaccess, a broken plugin, or a PHP fatal error. "Error establishing a database connection" is credentials or a database problem. 508 means you hit a resource limit. A browser DNS error means the domain is not resolving, which is a domain problem, not a hosting one. A suspension notice means billing or abuse. Check your email.

3. CHECK THE OBVIOUS

Is the domain expired? Is the hosting invoice paid? Is the account over quota?

4. CHECK THE LOGS

cPanel > Metrics > Errors names the file and line for most code problems.

5. OPEN A TICKET

Include the exact error, the time it started, and what changed recently.
