What models do and do not know.
WHAT A CUTOFF IS
Models are trained on data collected up to a point. Events after that are unknown.
WHAT THIS MEANS
Ask about recent events and the model either says it does not know, or generates something plausible and wrong.
The second is more dangerous.
WHAT IT AFFECTS
Current prices, versions and specifications Recent news Who currently holds a position Anything that changes
WHAT IS LESS AFFECTED
Established concepts Historical facts How things work Language and writing
HOW SYSTEMS ADDRESS IT
Search capability, where the model retrieves current information and cites it Retrieval from your own documents You providing the current information in your prompt
WHAT TO DO
Assume anything time-sensitive may be outdated Provide current information yourself when it matters Use a system with search for current questions Verify anything specific
THE PRACTICAL RULE
Never rely on a model for current facts without verification.
