Your domain and your hosting are independent. You can move hosting while keeping the domain exactly where it is registered.
THE PROCESS
- Set up the new hosting account and get its nameservers.
- Build or migrate the site there and test it thoroughly using your hosts file, so you are confident before anything public changes.
- Lower the TTL on your DNS records a day in advance if you can.
- Change the nameservers at your registrar to the new host's pair.
- Leave the old hosting running for at least a week. Visitors whose DNS has not yet updated will still be served correctly.
- Once traffic has fully moved and email is arriving at the new server, cancel the old hosting.
EMAIL NEEDS PARTICULAR CARE
Mail sent during propagation may arrive at either server. Create the mailboxes on the new server before switching, and check both during the transition so nothing is lost.
DO NOT CANCEL FIRST
Cancelling the old hosting before the new one is live and propagated guarantees downtime and can lose email permanently. Always overlap.
