Reducing your obligations.
THE PRINCIPLE
Every piece of data you hold is something to protect, disclose and eventually delete.
Collecting less reduces all three.
WHERE TO CUT
Form fields you do not act on Optional information collected out of habit Analytics you never look at Tracking scripts for services you abandoned
THE CONTACT FORM EXAMPLE
Name, email, message. Three fields.
Company name, address, how they heard of you, and industry are frequently collected and never used.
Each is a barrier to submission and an obligation.
THE ORDER FORM
You need what is required to fulfil and to contact. Not more.
MARKETING CONSENT
Separate and explicit. A customer buying something has not agreed to marketing.
An optional tick, not pre-ticked.
RETENTION
Decide how long you keep things and act on it.
Form submissions from three years ago serve no purpose and remain your responsibility.
THE BENEFIT
Fewer fields means more submissions, and less to protect.
Both good.
